Recently, Philips asked me to review their new ClearTouch Essence Garment Steamer – my response was an eager “YES!!” I was actually super excited to get this steamer (more so than other products I review) because we were in the midst of packing for our holiday travels.

Living in hot, tropical weather year round, our winter clothes basically go into retirement for almost the entire year before they are extracted from our closet for our Christmas holidays in the USA. Not to mention the mold and mildew smell that gets into all our garments and fabrics if they haven’t been used for some time. Hence, this was the perfect opportunity to test out the ClearTouch Essence Garment Steamer and see if it really worked as promised.

First let me give you details about the product….

The Philips ClearTouch Essence Garment Steamer

The ClearTouch Essence Steamer is meant to refresh clothes without washing or dry cleaning. You pour your own favorite fragrance in the MyEssence fragrance cap and the steam gives a fresh smell to your clothes (even the delicate silk fabrics). The steam removes cigarette, food and body odors and kills up to to 99.9% of bacteria.

My Step-by-Step Review

Instead of just telling you about the ClearTouch Essence Garment Steamer, let me show you with step-by-step pictures on how quick & easy it is to set-up and steam your clothes.

Step 1:  Remove the water tank, fill the water to the designated line and replace the tank.

Step 2:  Remove the MyEssence cap, put a few drops of your scent on the MyEssence cap sponge, and then click back into place.

Super Note: I found that my “peppermint” essential oil gave off the best and most long lasting scent. 

Step 3:  Place the hanger on the steamer and turn the gray knob to lock in place.

Step 4:  Press the “on” button at the base of the machine. Wait a few seconds for the steam to come out and then steam your clothes.

Super Note: Once you turn on the machine on the steam will come out in about 10-20 seconds. It is very hot, which allows you steam each garment quickly. You can also wear the special glove (included with the steamer) for extra protection so you don’t burn your hand.

Step 4:  Finished! Now you have fresh smelling, wrinkle free clothes.

SuperMommy’s Overall Opinion

After steaming all the winter clothes and jackets for our trip, I got an idea. If the steamer worked this great on clothes, it could also freshen up the curtains! I used a combination of peppermint oil in the MyEssence cap with some Febreze and viola fresh curtains without spending tons of money on dry cleaning. Super Disclaimer: Not sure if the ClearTouch Essence Garment Steamer is meant for curtains – but it worked on mine. 😉

In addition to the winter clothes and curtains, since I received the Steamer about a month ago, we use it regularly in the place of the iron (especially for our delicate clothes). It works fast and really gets out the wrinkles with minimal effort. Best of all it makes leaves a nice fresh scent on the clothes.

And just in case you are wondering, the steamer is quite compact and easy to store in a small space when not in use.

Now the ClearTouch Essence Garment Steamer is not a “must-have” item, but it is definitely a handy appliance to have in the house, especially if you wear a lot of delicate clothes that require regular dry cleaning and pressing. This product does help keep your clothes (and other fabrics) in your house fresh and almost bacteria free. The Steamer is simple to set-up, fast to use and easy to store away  – a definite thumbs up on my end.
