Here is a fun and simple “food free” cupcake idea using SOCKS! Not only are these cupcakes fun for kids, they are also very creative and super easy to make. These cupcakes are easier than baking, can be done way in advance and require no refrigeration!
Now you might ask, “Why on earth would someone want a cupcake made from “socks”?” Featured Super Mom Christie Scollon recently made these cupcakes for her son Owen’s 3rd Birthday. Both of her kids are on a sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, carb-free, low fruit diet. That pretty much ruled out just about anything she could serve for her son’s school birthday celebration. She still wanted to do something special for his birthday, so she decided to go “food-free”.
Things You Need:
- Socks (choose sizes that fit the kids & some for the teachers)
- Baking Cups
- Pom Poms
- Double Sided Tape
- Cupcake Display Dish
Note: Each cupcake uses 1 whole pair of socks. There is an outer layer and an inner rosette.
Step-by-Step on How To Make Sock Cupcakes –
Step 1: Create the outer layer or cup by first turning one sock inside out. Then fold the cuff over and tuck the middle up and down until you have something that resembles a cup with the design part on the outside now.
Step 2: Roll the inner rosette. It helps to fold the heal in and to create as rectangular a piece as you can.
Step 3: Insert the inner rosette into the outer cup.
Step 4: Place the entire cupcake into the baking cup. Adjust as needed.
Step 5: Attach a pom pom (or other suitable cake topper) using double sided tape to each cupcake.
Step 6: Serve on a beautiful dish such as a cupcake holder or a tiered tray. Or package in a baking box or foil tray. Anything to make it look more like real cupcakes.
The first cupcake you make might not look so great, but you get much better at it with practice. And the nice thing about making these is you can do them over and over again until you get it just the way you want it.
Super Note: These cupcakes are great for birthday parties, office get togethers, Father’s Day, baby showers, diaper cakes, just about any occasion. They also make very cute individually wrapped gifts or take home party treats.
Special Thanks to Super Mom Christie for sharing her Sock Cupcakes with the SuperMommy Readers.
even better if the party is held at an indoor playground, and the guests forgot to bring socks!
What an awesome idea Mabel!! You could set up the sock cupcakes on a three-tiered tray and guests can take a cupcake if they forgot their socks or you can pass them out to everyone as they enter the party. Thanks for sharing! xoxo
