Are you looking for an easy DIY craft activity for your kids birthday party?  Try having a “cookie decorating” station.

You can make this activity as basic or as colorful as you like. Some people only have one colored icing, while others might have 4 or 5 and the type of toppings are really up to you. As for the cookies. You can bake your own big sugar cookies at home (any shape you like) or just buy store bought ones to decorate.  If you don’t want the kid’s to have so much sugar, you can make butter cookies or oatmeal cookies – just as long as they are big and don’t crumble easily, any cookie will do.

Things You Need

  • Big Sugar Cookies
  • Icing
  • Toppings
  • Plastic knives and bowls
  • Clear plastic bags (optional)
  • Plates

How to Set Up:

Tables & Chairs: You will need a table with some chairs – kids like to sit and decorate their cookies and this makes it feel like an actual party activity.  You can decorate the table with a table-cover and/or use some plates according to your party theme.  If you want to get really creative, make a large sign for the table, for example “Cookie Decorating Fun”.

Icing: You can either put the colored icing into decorating bags (or normal plastic bags with the tip cut off) to make tubes of icing for the kids to squeeze out, or put the icing into bowls and then have the kids spread it with a plastic knife or popsicle stick onto the cookie.

Toppings: There are a variety of toppings you can use for a cookie decorating activity. The favorites are m&m’s, colored sprinkles and mini-marshmallows. For a less sugary alternative you can always use raisins, cranberries, peanuts, etc.

Once the kids have finished decorating their cookies, they usually eat it right away. Otherwise, you can always provide mini-boxes, or clear bags for the kids to take their cookies home.

This is a super easy activity, that doesn’t cost much money or effort to coordinate. Not to mention it’s both an activity and a party food – 2 for 1. Best of all kids just love it. Try it out at your next birthday party and see for yourself.

Good luck & Happy Party Planning.
