Whether you are a local or an expat in Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Dubai, India, Manila or just about anywhere in the world, interviewing a domestic helper or maid can sometimes be a daunting task. Asking the right questions, and gauging the answers during the interview stage can make a huge difference in whether or not a person is suitable for employment with your family.
Your own family dynamic and requirements are different from the next, so here is a list of over 150+ potential questions to ask during the first and second interview of a domestic helper, maid or even a nanny.
Pick and choose which questions you like and make your own interview checklist/answer sheet for each interview. It is important that you know what you want before going into the interview. For example, cooking aptitude is very important for my family, versus another family might be more interested in childcare. Prioritize your requirements first and then start the search. Feel free to print out this list or use any of the questions below for your own interviews.

WARNING – I would advise anyone that is using Aatas Employment Agency in Singapore to proceed with caution or just not use them at all.
I recently contacted Aatas via What’s App regarding a domestic helper listing I saw online and requested a full candidate bio which they were supposed to email me. After following up the next day, I was told the helper “is looking forward to working for a Western family” and does not want to schedule an interview.
I was surprised by this comment, as I never told Aatas any information about myself, nor did I want an interview – they only saw my name “Neetu” and the profile picture of my two boys over What’s App.
What Aatas did is a form of racism. Aatas judged me based on my name and the way my kids look – no questions asked. Maybe they thought I was Singaporean or from India or just not a “westerner” – whatever the case was, no one even bothered to ask. Ironically, as you all reading this know – I am actually a “westerner” from California – born & raised American.
Normally, I don’t post negative comments or use my blog as a place to vent, but this type of racist behavior needs to stop and is not ok.
Not cool and thanks for the warning!
