Bricks 4 Kidz is educational place where kids learn, build and play with LEGOS! Although this concept has been in the U.S.A. for many years, a Bricks 4 Kidz  recently opened in Singapore at the Valley Point Shopping Centre and in Turf City at the new Grandstand.

Since my boys love playing with their Lego Duplo blocks at home, I was really eager to see what this new place was all about. Over the Winter school break, Bricks 4 Kidz at Valley Point offered some free preview days for their classes, I decided to check out their 1 hour Mommy & Me class with my 18 month old son.

The class started off with some songs, the usual ones (nothing Lego related).  Then we did a counting activity with the Legos, where the kid’s made Lego stairs for the little Lego man to climb up. After that we focused on the letter “L”. We repeated the letter and the sounds that “L” makes. We also made a Lego L.  We continued on to do a fine motor skills activity, where the kids had to put Legos into a small bottle and then try to shake them out.  We proceeded to make and walk a Lego dog and then we built a tower out of some super-sized Lego bricks.  Finally at the end of the class, the big red table was opened and inside were 1000’s of Lego Duplo’s for the children to play and build with.

Most of the kids in the class were eager to explore their new surroundings and had a hard time staying focused, which is understandable since this was a group of 1 ½ -2 ½ year olds. My son seemed to enjoy himself during the class, although it was hard to keep him away from the Lego wall, where he amused himself by taking the small pieces of Legos and putting them in his mouth.  

Prior to leaving, I noticed a row of laptop computers which intrigued me, so I decided to ask about their other classes. In addition to the Mommy & Me classes, Bricks 4 Kidz offers a variety of classes for all ages.  They have a class for preschoolers, ages 3 -5, which focuses on building the letters of the Alphabet (using Legos), phonics, sequencing and positioning.

For ages 5 and above Bricks 4 Kidz offers a class where the students build motorized models of various modes of “transportation”- trains, planes, automobiles.

For ages 7 and up (this is where they use the laptops), there is a movie making camp that is 3 hours long. The kids will get to plan, script, stage, shoot and produce their own mini-movie using Stop Motion Animation. I am not sure how the class actually is, but that sounds pretty awesome if you ask me.  What a unique and creative idea!

Although most of the older classes seem more geared towards boys, Bricks for Kidz also offer something for the girls, a special “Girls Wanna Have Fun” 3 hour camp for crafting and creating using Lego bricks, where they serve cupcakes and macaroons.

They also have a “Kidz Night Out” on Friday and Saturdays from 7-10pm. They advertise it as date night for the parents while the kids have their own evening of fun with games, pizza and drinks and a “Free Play” option on Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays.

Will SuperMommy sign up her kids? I was not sold on the Mommy & Me classes – probably because Xavion is still a little too young for the class. Everyday is “Mommy & Xavion” time, so we don’t need another class to add to our busy schedule. Additionally, I felt the class needed a bit more tweaking to keep the attention span of the busy toddlers. That being said, on a side note – this would probably be a great “Daddy & Me” class!

I do intend to sign up my soon to be 4 year old son for some classes during the summer. I think he will really enjoy the whole learning with “Legos” concept since he loves playing with his Lego Duplo at home. Also, I will definitely plan on enquiring about the movie making class in three years when my son turns 7!!

SuperMommy’s Overall Impression: I definitely think Bricks 4 Kidz has a lot of potential. The whole concept of using Legos to learn is something that you don’t many of the other kid’s enrichment places. This would be great place to enroll your son while your daughter has dance class at Jazz Cats (a kid’s dance studio in Valley Point). This will give you some alone time to shop at the Cold Storage or hang out at Starbucks.

I think that kids, especially slightly older boys will like the classes they offer. In my opinion, this place is worth checking out at least for a trial class.
