Are you planning “movie” themed birthday party or a special family movie night, or maybe you are just having a fancy popcorn bar? Well these popcorn cupcakes are sure to “pop” with all your party guests!! Not only are these fabulous popcorn (aka marshmallow) cupcakes super easy to make, but they look absolutely amazing when they are done.
Not a baker? Don’t have the time to bake and decorate too? Don’t worry, these cupcakes are all about the final look. It’s ok to get store bought cupcakes or use a cake mix (no one can tell). The key is the decorating (which is actually super simple and easy to do).
What you will need…
- Cupcakes (any flavor) with lots white frosting on top.
- Large or Medium Marshmallows (preferably soft ones)
- Yellow Food Coloring Spray
- Popcorn Cupcake Wrappers (see below for the free printable)
- Clear Tape
Time to Decorate: Each cupcake takes approximately 2-4 minutes to make from start to finish. This will depend on the size of your cupcake and how many marshmallows you put on each one. Also, if you are a perfectionist like me, then it might take a bit longer. 🙂
Popcorn Cupcakes Step-by-Step…
Step 1
Print & cut out out the popcorn cupcake wrappers. Click here to visit the Lemon Squeezy website for the free printable cupcake wrappers.
Super Note: Depending on the size of your cupcakes, you might want to adjust the actual popcorn wrapper size. Just open a Word document and insert this as a picture and then stretch accordingly.
Step 2
Make, Bake or Buy your cupcakes. The key is to make sure that there is lots and lots of frosting on top.
Step 3
Tightly wrap the popcorn wrapper around your cupcake. Use the tape to hold it in place.
Step 4
Start decorating the cupcakes using the marshmallows.
Take a big marshmallow and using your hands twist and turn it to make it look like popcorn. Keep placing these on top of the frosting. Make them all different sizes and shapes and push them in the icing.
Super Note: I found that the big marshmallows worked much better than the smaller ones. Use a brand that melts easy. I used the Rocky Mountain Marshmallows and those were really soft and easy to work with. I am not a big fan of marshmallows, but the marshmallows on top of the cupcakes actually tasted really good!!
Step 5
Spray the marshmallows with yellow food coloring mist.
Super Note: I used the Wilton Yellow Color Spray Mist and it worked great. If you are in Singapore you can buy it from Phoon Huat or Spotlight (FYI: Phoon Huat is cheaper), or you can buy it from Amazon.
Step 6
You are finished!! Stand back and admire your excellent work.
Now wasn’t that easy. 🙂
