Since Xavion’s 3rd Birthday Party was at the Jurong Bird Park in Singapore, we decided to do a whole “bird” themed party. The kids attending the party were all 2-3 years of age, so doing an “Angry Birds” theme did not really seem appropriate, hence the whole “wacky” bird theme.

Making your own piñata at is very easy to do. It just takes some time. Before you can get started on making the piñata look like a bird, you will first need to actually make the paper mache piñata out of a balloon. The bigger the balloon – the bigger the  piñata. Click on my easy step-by-step guide on how to make your own piñata and how to make the special paper-mache glue.

Once you have made the piñata, you will  need to stuff the piñata with goodies. Here are some ideas on what to put in your piñata besides candy.

Super Note: I personally like to make individual bags of treats using a combination of toys and a little bit of candy. I hate when kids scramble and fight for candy that has fallen on the floor. I usually make more bags than kids attending and each child gets one to take home. This also allows parents to decide whether their kids are allowed to eat the candy right away or need to wait.

Once your piñata has been stuffed full of goodies, you will need to decorate your piñata to look like a wacky “bird”.  You can use any colors you like, or just follow what I did below.

Things You Need to Decorate

  • Red, yellow, orange, white crepe paper
  • White and black construction paper (eyes)
  • Newspaper (for the wings)
  • Cardboard (for the beak)
  • Glue
  • Masking tape
  • Scissors

Decorating Step-by-Step

Step 1: Cut the crepe paper in squares and fray the edges to make one long piece.

Step 2: Apply glue to the back of the crepe paper and place it on the piñata. You will need to cover the entire piñata with the red crepe paper. Depending on the size of your piñata it should take about 1 hour.

Step 3: Cut out the beak from the cardboard. Paint it a bright yellow. Then set it aside to dry.

Step 4: Fold and cut the newspaper to make wings. Use your own creativity and judgment when creating the wings.

Step 6: Attach the wings using tape. Make sure you cover the tape with more crepe paper

Step 7: Cut out the eyes from the construction paper and glue on the crepe paper using a puff flower method.

Step 8: Glue on the black eyeballs.

Step 9: Tape the beak to the piñata (make sure it is dry first). Cover the tape with extra crepe paper.

Step 10: Make hair for the piñata out of the crepe paper. Then use tape to attach it to the top of the pinata.

Step 11:  Pat yourself on the back! Now you are finally done!! Yippee.

Here are some pictures from the piñata at the party! The kids (and parents) absolutely loved it.

Good luck and have a great party!
